The world is also
expecting more from
businesses when it
comes to DEI progress.
In fact, the recent filing of a Nasdaq
proposal that would require listed
companies to have greater diversity in its
executive positions speaks to the changing
economic and social importance of these
initiatives.
Success in DEI involves an organization-wide strategy
focused on building a culture through values,
engaging talent, continuous learning, recognizing
success and employee activism. It is a complex
journey, but one worth investing the time, money and
effort required to drive business growth and improve
the engagement of employees, customers and all
other stakeholders.
Most organizations have traditionally addressed
DEI awareness through compliance education that
includes teaching the importance of being aware
of unconscious biases and embracing differences
in the workplace. But far fewer organizations target
development programs for underserved populations
or teach leaders, managers, and employees to
embed the principles of DEI in everything they do to
create a new culture.
Organizations that are new to DEI have access to
more training, tools, and resources than in any time
prior. Taking action to model business strategy on
proactive DEI practices that embody an organizations
ideals and values is the first step in building a culture
that is people-driven and evolving over time.
Summary
In the wake of the social justice movement
and COVID-19, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion has
never been more important, both as a business
driver and a way for organizations to connect
with their increasingly diverse workforces.
