Traditional training disrupted
This need for speed is one characteristic of modern learning. Sometimes the organization
needs 'good enough' learning content to meet an urgent need, rather than a perfectly
constructed course. Sometimes it does not need a course at all – not every performance issue
is best tackled with training.
These choices are part of the disruption of the old world of training, and its replacement with
a new, wider role for L&D. In this new role, L&D's work is less predictable and the function has
to make increasingly complex decisions. One of these is where and how to source materials for
learning and for performance support. Of all the decisions it has to make, this is surely one of
the most fundamental, and one which has changed the most over time.
