A changing US population and consumer demographic has intensified the need to hire and retain a diverse retail workforce. People
of color now comprise roughly a third of the US population and will become the majority in 2045. Management, however, is not
representative with white males making up 86% of executive/senior level managers.

Retailers must strive to connect leadership to
front-counter workers to ensure decisions take into consideration their demographics, create more openings for diverse employees
to advance their career paths upward, and for training programs to include more than standard diversity compliance offerings.
Successful retail businesses are overcoming today's challenges and
seeking solutions by creating DEI initiatives tied to primary business
goals, starting at the top to implement their programs, supplemented
by ERGs and tied to accountability processes. The industry is uniquely
poised to meet DEI goals because the driving service mission is to meet
consumers where they are in both product value and cultural values.
