Diversity, Equity & Inclusion | www.opensesame.com | (503) 808-1286 | 9 Development Programs to Promote DEI Most organizations have traditionally addressed DEI awareness through compliance education that includes teaching the importance of being aware of unconscious biases and embracing differences in the workplace. But far fewer organizations target development programs for underserved populations or teach leaders, managers, and employees to embed the principles of DEI in everything they do to create a new culture. Programs focused on non-discrimination and regulatory compliance made up 68% of organizations studies by the Brandon Hall Group in their 2020 Diversity & Inclusion Benchmarking Study. Courses centered on overcoming unconscious bias and embracing differences in the workplace comprised 56% and 52% respectively. Curricula centered around inclusion themes received less than 25%. Organizations have a long way to go to improve the availability of comprehensive DEI learning opportunities. Leaders must go beyond standard compliance training to build a culture of self-awareness that empowers "unconscious inclusion." Tomorrow's manufacturing leaders need more than obligatory diversity compliance classes; they need to see leadership that reflects the diversity of the customer base and communities the organization serves, and training that proves it.
