Diversity, Equity & Inclusion | www.opensesame.com | (503) 808-1286 | 9 Diverse, But Not in Management A recent survey from Hcareers found that a majority 66% of workers in hospitality think the industry is more diverse than other sectors, with the remaining feeling they were on par. And yet, according to the 2020 Bureau of Labor Current Population Survey, over 80% of hospitality management positions are held by White workers with 7% held by Black workers, a concerning snapshot of a declining trend: the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) reported that in 2007 nearly 30% of upper management positions were held by people of color; in 2015, that number had decreased to 19%. 2 The world is expecting more from businesses when it comes to DEI progress. The recent filing of a Nasdaq proposal that would require listed companies to have greater diversity in its executive positions speaks to the changing economic and social importance of these initiatives. The key to more equity in upper management starts with creating more openings for diverse employees to advance their career paths upward. Mentoring programs and partnerships provide the information and support candidates need to make their way, but company's must commit to the effort. A multinational and multiethnic market calls for greater diversity in management teams and the hospitality market can oblige. Expand the candidate pool with a diverse recruiting initiative. 38% of orgs build relationships to recruit from associations, groups, educational institutions and government entities associated with underserved talent communities. Meet Talent and Retention Goals with a Diverse Recruiting Initiative If you have significant talent gaps that impede your ability to grow, a diverse recruiting initiative can enable the expansion of the candidate pool. Doing so addresses a critical business problem while establishing a foundation for diverse recruiting going forward. Despite the benefits, less than 50% of organizations have a plan to ensure DEI recruiting processes. 1 1 Brandon Hall Group, D&I Benchmarking Study, 2020. 2 https://www.hcareers.com/article/employer-articles/survey-results-diversity-and-hospitality-upper-management
