Diversity, Equity & Inclusion | www.opensesame.com | (503) 808-1286 | 3 Unfortunately, one glaring assessment omission is in the tracking of inclusion data. Roughly 40% of organizations are not collecting information on this essential part of the DEI equation. Unless employees are treated equitably and feel a sense of belonging and inclusion, diversity efforts have little value. 1 Basic tracking and measurement of DEI efforts also varies widely. Overall, employers are about 2.4 times more likely to track metrics for diversity as they are to track inclusion. 2 This makes it exceedingly difficult to understand whether the diversity of organizations is having any positive impact on the level of inclusion. Leading organizations use these inclusion metrics to measure whether employers feel their workplace embodies a sense of belonging: Employee sentiment Participation in Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) Participation in various types of training Promotion rates Engagement scores Recognition Performance ratings Project team inclusion Accurately measuring DEI progress from multiple angles provides the means to focus on what is work- ing and what needs to improve with your DEI plan. The right metrics depend on different factors, not the least of which is your business strategy, followed by the maturity of any current DEI program, and the specific (and unique) goals of the initiative. Meaningful DEI metrics may also need to take into consideration impacting factors in the community and with specific stakeholders. Tools must also be customized and relevant to an organization's mission and identity. DEI tracking should be ongoing and must be accompanied by methods that respond to the data to make improvements that are open and transparent. Diversity Without Inclusion Doesn't Work What is Working, and What Needs Work Employees with an inclusive manager are 1.3x more likely to feel that their innovative potential is unlocked. 3 1 Brandon Hall Group, Diversity & Inclusion Benchmarking Study, 2020. 2 Brandon Hall Group, Diversity & Inclusion Benchmarking Study, 2020. 3 Harvard Business Review: "Diversity Doesn't Stick Without Inclusion," 2017.
